The EJOT FDS® (Flow Drill Screw) is a flow drilling screw for detachable high-strength sheet metal connections. It can be used to join thin sheets of steel or aluminum without component preparation such as pre-drilling or punching. The high thread-carrying capacity of the FDS screw creates a high-strength connection that can transmit both high pull-out strengths and high shear loads.
When screwing in the flow drilling EJOT FDS® a metric thread is created, which can take in a conventional metric screw in case of a pending repair. The screwing-in process is chipless. The resulting connection is water- and gas-tight.
High-strength connections in lightweight construction and the automotive sector
The topic of lightweight construction is now of critical importance in many industries. In the automotive sector in particular, priority is high, because reducing fuel consumption is one of the main challenges in individual transportation. At the same time, the components used must also be able to withstand high loads – the quality of the bolted joints is therefore still of central importance.
This is where the advantages of the FDS screw, which is predestined for these complex operating conditions, become apparent.

- Large household appliances
Sequence phases of the FDS® bolting process
- Heating of the sheet due to pressure force and high speed
- Penetration of the material with the conical screw tip
- Forming of the cylindrical pull-through
- Chipless grooving of a metric jig nut thread
- Through-screwing
- Tightening of the screw with set torque
Selection of screwdriving equipment
Flow punch forming requires a high screwdriver speed and a defined pressure force, thread-forming and screw tightening require a high torque. For the exact specification of the suitable equipment, the product management FDS® will be pleased to assist you. In addition, assembly tests can be carried out in the application technology laboratory at EJOT® to determine the selection criteria.
