What is corrosion?

In some cases corrosion can be seen as pleasing, such as a light patina on a copper watering can used for decoration, but most of time we like to prevent corrosion from taking hold of our designs until the expected life cycle of the product has passed. Corrosion can lead to unhappy customers who may find rust stains on their shiny new garden tractor, or corrosion may even cause injury and death resulting from the collapse of a ceiling over a swimming pool who's roof was designed improperly. Understanding the types of corrosion and using good design practices to prevent it should be important to any engineer.

In the following white paper you can discover the different types of corrosion and learn how to prevent it. Check out what Doug Jones from the Bossard Expert Team can tell about:

  • Uniform corrosion
  • Crevice corrosion
  • Galvanic corrosion
  • Pitting corrosion
  • Intergranular corrosion
  • Stress corrosion cracking
  • Hydrogen embrittlement
